    Maverick

    1994, 2h 7m

    Genre: Western, Comedy
    TMDB Rating: 69%

Our Review: Watched it on 11-03-2023 with HS at our place in Niagara. Rented it on Amazon Prime. This is a genuine Western but also a genuine comedy. Excellent cinematography, beautiful scenery, excellent acting by Gibson, Foster, and Garner. It’s an interesting story, with lots of action. The movie tracks the adventures of the trio making their way to a major poker tournament and pays considerable attention to the game itself. This riverboat gambling section is exciting and intense. Fantastic twists near the end. The music is scored by Randy Newman and Vilmos Zsigmond does the photography. Based on the 1950s television series of the same name. The main character on TV was played by Garner. Here Gibson plays Maverick, and Garner has a huge supporting role. Enjoyment rating: 3.5 stars.

Clean Review: From a clean standpoint, there are a few expletives throughout the movie. Of course the whole premise of the movie is of the leading characters “taking people for their money” through petty theft, deception and through card playing. An objectionable scene occurs where the main characters engage in a tryst on the riverboat. Thankfully this is all behind a large bed, and nothing objectionable is actually seen. On morality levels, this is perhaps just below that of an average film. Adults, view it at your discretion and we hope these comments help you decide. Not suitable for children or young teens. Clean Rating: 3.

TMDB: Maverick is a gambler who would rather con someone than fight them, and needs an additional three thousand dollars in order to enter a winner-takes-all poker game that begins in a few days, so he joins forces with a woman gambler with a marvellous southern accent, and the two try and enter the game.

    The Out-of-Towners

    1970, 1h 38m

    Genre: Comedy
    TMDB Rating: 68%

Our Comments: 10-15-2023 with HS and SF (who owns it on DVD), in the Chicago suburbs. This is a well-written and well executed “screwball comedy” by Neil Simon. If you watch it, you have to be in the mood for irritating and constant setbacks at every turn. One mishap after another assails the poor couple on a business trip to New York! With this proviso out of the way, we were in a good mood that night and found it to be very funny and witty. The movie (same exact title) was remade in 1999, starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. Enjoyment rating: 3.5 star

Clean Comments: There are no real issues here from a clean standpoint. Other than a few mild expletives, this movie has no morally objectionable content. There are a few unsavory characters (they get robbed twice), but they’re simply a part of the adventure of mishaps.

TMDB: George & Gwen Kellerman make a trip to New York, where George is going to start a new job, it turns out to be a trip [where nothing goes according to plan].

  • Two Weeks Notice

    Two Weeks Notice

    2002, 1h 41m

    Genre: Comedy, Romance
    TMDB Rating: 64%

Our Comments: 10-10-2023 with HS, in Niagara. Rented it on Amazon. Very funny and enjoyable, with a believable story about a self-centered, womanizing, shallow multi-millionaire developer and an activist lawyer who winds up working for him through an interesting twist. There are memorably funny/witty lines in this movie. It’s a good date night movie to watch at home by mature viewers. Enjoyment rating: 3.5 star

Clean Comments: Given that the leading man is a shallow womanizer, you can surmise that there will be sexual references throughout the movie. There is a strip-chess scene that has a couple winding up in their underwear, and references to casual sex. But these things are not central to the movie. It stands on its own outside of these themes. This movie is not for kids or impressionable teens. But it is still basically an “average” movie from a morality standpoint. Two Weeks Notice would be a discretionary choice for mature viewers. Clean Rating: 3 (3 = Average for a Mainstream Film (several moral* issues; watch at your discretion).

TMDB: “Dedicated environmental lawyer Lucy Kelson goes to work for billionaire George Wade as part of a deal to preserve a community center. Indecisive and weak-willed George grows dependent on Lucy’s guidance on everything from legal matters to clothing. Exasperated, Lucy gives notice and picks Harvard graduate June Carter as her replacement. As Lucy’s time at the firm nears an end, she grows jealous of June and has second thoughts about leaving George.”

  • Meet Me in St. Louis

    Meet Me in St. Louis

    1944, 1h 53m

    Genre: Classics, Drama
    TMDB Rating: 70%

Our Comments: 10-05-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). The checkmark means we own it. This is a fine classic film that presents a look into 1903/1904 St. Louis family life leading up to the World’s Fair. It’s a pretty nice classic but could have been better crafted. In its slight awkwardness, it lacks some of the well rounded, easy-to-watch feel of the very best classics of the 30’s to early 60’s. And why put in that scene about the town kids at Halloween running amuck? At any rate, it’s still quite a nice film and may be worth it if you’re in the mood for a 40’s classic. Enjoyment rating: 3.5 star.

TMDB: “The life of a St. Louis family in the year before the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.”

    Romancing The Stone

    Genre: Action, Adventure
    TMDB Rating: 68%

Our Comments: 09-30-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). The checkmark means we own it. This is fun and adventurous movie that we’ve seen a few times since it came out. But as our commitment to moral values has grown over the years, it’s no longer as easy to justify the blatant opening scene of cleavage, the use of the Lord’s name in vain, more profanity, and a steamy sex scene between the main characters. So we can’t give it any more than a 2.5 Clean Rating. It’s certainly not suitable for children or teens. See this link for how clean ratings work. On the merit of the film outside of the noted issues, the movie is slightly dated, but still has a lot to offer in the genres of action and adventure, but the objectionable content the filmakers added was entirely unnecessary. Enjoyment rating: 3 star.

TMDB: “Though she can spin wild tales of passionate romance, novelist Joan Wilder has no life of her own. Then one day adventure comes her way in the form of a mysterious package. It turns out that the parcel is the ransom she’ll need to free her abducted sister, so Joan flies to South America to hand it over. But she gets on the wrong bus and winds up hopelessly stranded in the jungle.”

  • Little Women

    Little Women

    1949, 2h 1m

    Genre: Classics, Drama
    TMDB Rating: 74%

Our Comments: 09-29-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). The checkmark means we own it. We enjoyed the loyal and loving relationships in the family and among neighbours. This is a tight-knit family that faces its ups and downs. Jo, played by June Allyson, doesn’t like change, and resists it. Yet so much change happens in the unfolding life of this family. The movie presents a complex and interesting thread of day-to-day life, defining moments, personality conflicts, illness, loss, and romance. The conclusion of the message is that there will be changes and challenges in life, but the human spirit must endeavor to prevail. We overlooked some of the melodrama, given the time in which the movie was made. To be sure, this is a film that has merit. It’s very good! We were torn between giving it a 3.5 or 4 star rating. We settled on 3.5 plus!

The movie is based on the book. And several versions have been put to film. We will try some of the other releases of Little Women. There are several.

TMDB: “Louisa May Alcott’s autobiographical account of her life with her three sisters in Concord Mass in the 1860s. With their father fighting in the civil war, the sisters: Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth are at home with their mother. Jo is an outspoken woman for her time. The story is of how the sisters grow up, find love and find their place in the world.”

    Pillow Talk

    1959, 1h 42m

    Genre: Classics, Comedy
    TMDB Rating: 72%

My Comments: 08-21-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). Borrowed the set from ASB. A lovely little romp through Big City 1959 through the lives of two people sharing a telephone party line. Rock Hudson plays the playboy at the other end of Doris Day’s line. It’s a funny movie, with a pleasant glimpse back to the late 50’s: scenery, decor, and social setting of the time. Even back then, the sexual revolution was already emerging. And this leads us to the moral dilemma with this movie. A modest adult can certainly deal with the many compromised attitudes and innuendos (both sexual and in the portrayal of alcoholism), but this movie is probably not for impressionable young teens.

Overall, we enjoyed the movie for its classic feel, its lively energy and comedic delightfulness, but were a bit disappointed in the lack of innocence you usually get with a 50’s film.

TMDB: “Playboy songwriter Brad Allen’s succession of romances annoys his neighbor, interior designer Jan Morrow, who shares a telephone party line with him and hears all his breezy routines. After Jan unsuccessfully lodges a complaint against him, Brad sets about to seduce her in the guise of a sincere and upstanding Texas rancher. When mutual friend Jonathan discovers that his best friend is moving in on the girl he desires, however, sparks fly.”

    Genre: Classics, Comedy
    TMDB Rating: 68%

My Comments: 09-18-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). Borrowed the box set from ASB. A clean and hilariously funny classic comedy. From George’s hypochondria to Judy’s relaxed acceptance of it to misunderstandings, it’s a great little farce. Tony Randall as the guy next door does an incredible job and has you falling off the couch in laughter. This is a great little film!

TMDB: “At one of his many visits to his doctor, hypochondriac George Kimball mistakes a dying man’s diagnosis for his own and believes he only has about two more weeks to live. Wanting to take care of his wife Judy, he doesn’t tell her and tries to find her a new husband. When he finally does tell her, she quickly finds out he’s not dying at all (while he doesn’t) and she believes it’s just a lame excuse to hide an affair, so she decides to leave him.”
