The Out-of-Towners
1970, 1h 38m
Our Comments: 10-15-2023 with HS and SF (who owns it on DVD), in the Chicago suburbs. This is a well-written and well executed “screwball comedy” by Neil Simon. If you watch it, you have to be in the mood for irritating and constant setbacks at every turn. One mishap after another assails the poor couple on a business trip to New York! With this proviso out of the way, we were in a good mood that night and found it to be very funny and witty. The movie (same exact title) was remade in 1999, starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn. Enjoyment rating: 3.5 star
Clean Comments: There are no real issues here from a clean standpoint. Other than a few mild expletives, this movie has no morally objectionable content. There are a few unsavory characters (they get robbed twice), but they’re simply a part of the adventure of mishaps.
TMDB: George & Gwen Kellerman make a trip to New York, where George is going to start a new job, it turns out to be a trip [where nothing goes according to plan].

Send Me No Flowers
1964, 1h 40m

Genre: Classics, Comedy
TMDB Rating: 68%My Comments: 09-18-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). Borrowed the box set from ASB. A clean and hilariously funny classic comedy. From George’s hypochondria to Judy’s relaxed acceptance of it to misunderstandings, it’s a great little farce. Tony Randall as the guy next door does an incredible job and has you falling off the couch in laughter. This is a great little film!
TMDB: “At one of his many visits to his doctor, hypochondriac George Kimball mistakes a dying man’s diagnosis for his own and believes he only has about two more weeks to live. Wanting to take care of his wife Judy, he doesn’t tell her and tries to find her a new husband. When he finally does tell her, she quickly finds out he’s not dying at all (while he doesn’t) and she believes it’s just a lame excuse to hide an affair, so she decides to leave him.”

TMDB: “Lindsey Wilson first found love in the romantic city of Paris when she was a university student studying art there. Now, twenty years later, she is returning to the City of Light to take her daughter on an adventure there. With a little inspiration from the city’s famed “love locks” on its scenic bridges, the adventure proves to be a journey of romance and rediscovery for the divorced Lindsey when she reconnects with her college flame in Paris and finds that her first love just might be the lasting love of her life after all.”

Casablanca
1943, 1h 42m

Genre: Classics, Drama
TMDB Rating: 82%My Comments: √ 03-31-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). A masterpiece. Not because it’s iconic, which it is. But because it’s that good. Impeccably interwoven story of war, the plight/fight for freedom, romance, heartbreak, and fate.
TMDB: “In Casablanca, Morocco in December 1941, a cynical American expatriate meets a former lover, with unforeseen complications.”
