    Mary Poppins Returns movie

    Genre: Fantasy
    TMDB Rating: 65%

Our Review: ✔ Watched it on 3-7-2024 (PS, HS in Niagara). Long awaited sequel to the orginal great classic. About 54 years later! Wonderful to see Dick Van Dyke in the new film! This is an excellent family movie; and being from Disney, it’s almost a surprise that it lacks their usual woke foolishness. The music is Poppins-style, but not quite as memorable as that of the original. But this is a worthy sequel. The movie continues the sense of enchantment, make-believe, and childhood wonder of the original. Mary Poppins is slightly more human and vulnerable in this version. But she too helps to put things right in a family that needs quite a bit of help and guidance. Excellent performances by:

    • Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins
    • Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack
    • Meryl Streep as Cousin Topsy
    • Colin Firth as Wilkins / Wolf (voice)
    • Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawes Jr.

For us, this movie is a fresh delight in the tradition of the classic. Enjoyment rating: 4 stars.

Clean Review: From a clean standpoint, there are no obvious issues. It’s a family film with a happy, positive, fantasy of childhood make-believe and wonder. An excellent movie with a Clean Rating of 5 (the max).

TMDB: Mary Poppins returns to the Banks family and helps them evade grave dangers by taking them on magical, musical adventures.

    Genre: Comedy
    TMDB Rating: 72%

Our Review: ✔ Watched it on 12-25-2023 (PS, HS in Niagara). This is another movie that has been a family tradition since it came out over 30 years ago. It is incredibly funny and entertaining. That said, there are several scenes that can grate on viewers from a morality standpoint. More below. Enjoyment rating: 4 stars.

Clean Review: From a clean standpoint, there are several moral issues. Immodest views of women, the male protagonist side-stepping that he’s married in the presence of a pretty shop clerk, rude behavior, innuendo, and more. These are downfalls. They fit in with the movie’s lampoon style, but it could have been just as funny without any of this. It is what it is. A very funny movie, but it barely achieves a Clean Rating of 3.

TMDB: It’s Christmastime, and the Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration. But things never run smoothly for Clark, his wife Ellen, and their two kids. Clark’s continual bad luck is worsened by his obnoxious family guests, but he manages to keep going, knowing that his Christmas bonus is due soon.

This movie is a delightful children’s tale of the real Christmas story of the birth of Jesus and the events leading up to this momentous moment in human history. The story is both from the perspective of lovable animals and people. A donkey and his friends. Mary and Joseph. The movie is very well made and has respect and reverence for the holy event.. Enjoyment rating: 4 star.

    TMDB Rating: 63%

Our Review: ✔ Watched it on 12-01-2023 (PS, HS, CB, ASB in Burlington. Long family history with this movie! We are always entertained by the humor and joy of this fine comedy. Enjoyment rating: 4 stars.

Clean Review: From a clean standpoint, there are a few issues; less than many mainstream movies though. There is some cleavage in places, brief references to unmarried sex, and there is violence in a few spots. It all fits together pretty well overall, and is still relatively “tame” for most audiences. Perhaps consider young impressionable children. Clean Rating: 3.5.

TMDB: A trio of unemployed silent film actors are mistaken for real heroes by a small Mexican village in search of someone to stop a malevolent bandit.

    Genre: Classics, Comedy
    TMDB Rating: 68%

My Comments: 09-18-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). Borrowed the box set from ASB. A clean and hilariously funny classic comedy. From George’s hypochondria to Judy’s relaxed acceptance of it to misunderstandings, it’s a great little farce. Tony Randall as the guy next door does an incredible job and has you falling off the couch in laughter. This is a great little film!

TMDB: “At one of his many visits to his doctor, hypochondriac George Kimball mistakes a dying man’s diagnosis for his own and believes he only has about two more weeks to live. Wanting to take care of his wife Judy, he doesn’t tell her and tries to find her a new husband. When he finally does tell her, she quickly finds out he’s not dying at all (while he doesn’t) and she believes it’s just a lame excuse to hide an affair, so she decides to leave him.”

Our Comments: √ 07-03-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS). Enjoyable entertainment with stellar performances by Keaton, Nicholson, etc. 4 star.

Clean Review: From a clean perspective, there are a few scenes that may be of concern. For example, the beginnings of an unmarried couple getting intimate, and very brief partially nude scene that’s actually very funny, and honestly shouldn’t put anyone’s knickers in a knot. On morality levels, this is a fairly average film. Adults, view it at your discretion. Not suitable for children or young impressionable teens. Clean rating: 3.

TMDB: Harry Sanborn is an aged music industry exec with a fondness for younger women like Marin, his latest trophy girlfriend. Things get a little awkward when Harry suffers a heart attack at the home of Marin’s mother, Erica. Left in the care of Erica and his doctor, a love triangle starts to take shape.

Our Comments: 06-25-2023 at our place in Niagara (PS, HS, NS). It needs to be understood that there are many moral issues (making a sport of theft, strong sexual themes and scenes, etc.). With these comments duly stated, and if the audience is well aware of these issues, then read on. It’s an entertaining premise and a fun, light-hearted exploration of the fantasy of pulling off the perfect heist, with wit and mastery by the wealthy perpetrator (Thomas Crown, played by Pierce Brosnan).
